Time of Reflection
“Even in peacetime I think those are very wrong who say that schoolboys should be encouraged to read the newspapers. Nearly all that a boy reads there in his teens will be known before he is twenty to have been false in emphasis and interpretation, if not in fact as well, and most of it will have lost all importance. Most of what he remembers he will therefore have to unlearn; and he will probably have acquired an incurable taste for vulgarity and sensationalism and the fatal habit of fluttering from paragraph to paragraph to learn how an actress has been divorced in California, a train derailed in France, and quadruplets born in New Zealand.”
~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) in Surprised by Joy
“Time cuts down all, both great and small
Xerxes the great did die, and so must you and I”
~ New England Primer, 1813
“I have tried to stand between these two forces, saying that we need emulate neither the ‘do nothingism’ of the complacent nor the hatred and despair of the black nationalist. For there is the more excellent way of love and nonviolent protest. I am grateful to God that, through the influence of the Negro church, the way of nonviolence became an integral part of our struggle. If this philosophy had not emerged, by now many streets of the South would, I am convinced, be flowing with blood. And I am further convinced that if our white brothers dismiss as ‘rabble rousers’ and ‘outside agitators’ those of us who employ nonviolent direct action, and if they refuse to support our nonviolent efforts, millions of Negroes will, out of frustration and despair, seek solace and security in black nationalist ideologies—a development that would inevitably lead to a frightening racial nightmare.”
~Martin Luther King Jr., “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”
“Hope for the Christian isn’t just confidence in a certain, glorious future. It’s hope in a present providence. It’s hope that God’s plans can’t be thwarted by local authorities or irate mobs, by unfriendly bosses or unbelieving husbands, by Supreme Court rulings or the next election. The Christian hope is that God’s purposes are so unassailable that a great thunderstorm of events can’t drive them off course. Even when we’re wave-tossed and lost at sea, Jesus remains the captain of the ship and the commander of the storm.”
~ Elliot Clark, contemporary author specializing in cross-cultural church planting
“No I don’t want to battle from beginning to end
I don’t want a cycle of recycled revenge
I don’t want to follow Death and all of his friends…
And, in the end, we lie awake, and we dream of making our escape.”
~Coldplay, “Death and All His Friends”
“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man [Adam], and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”
~Romans 5:12-14

Call to Worship
Micah 6:6-8 (NIV)
LEADER: With what shall I come before the Lord
and bow down before the exalted God?
PEOPLE: Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?
LEADER: Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
PEOPLE: Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
LEADER He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
PEOPLE: To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

MY HOPE IS BUILT
(Edward Mote & William B. Bradbury, 1863)
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
REFRAIN:
On Christ the solid rock I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil. (REFRAIN)
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay. (REFRAIN)
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne. (REFRAIN)

RESPONSIVE READING:
Based on Micah 6:9-16 7:9, 18-20 (NIV)
LEADER: Listen! The Lord is calling to the city—
and to fear your name is wisdom—
“Heed the rod and the One who appointed it.
PEOPLE: Oh Lord, have mercy. Pardon our iniquity.
LEADER: Am I still to forget your ill-gotten treasures, you wicked house,
and the short ephah, which is accursed?
Shall I acquit someone with dishonest scales,
with a bag of false weights?
PEOPLE: Oh Lord, have mercy. Pardon our iniquity.
LEADER: Your rich people are violent;
your inhabitants are liars
and their tongues speak deceitfully.
Therefore, I have begun to destroy you,
to ruin you because of your sins.
PEOPLE: Oh Lord, have mercy. Pardon our iniquity.
LEADER: You will eat but not be satisfied;
your stomach will still be empty.
You will store up but save nothing,
because what you save I will give to the sword.
PEOPLE: Oh Lord, have mercy. Pardon our iniquity.
LEADER: You will plant but not harvest;
you will press olives but not use the oil,
you will crush grapes but not drink the wine.
PEOPLE: Oh Lord, have mercy. Pardon our iniquity.
LEADER: You have observed the statutes of Omri
and all the practices of Ahab’s house;
you have followed their traditions.
Therefore I will give you over to ruin
and your people to derision;
you will bear the scorn of the nations.”
PEOPLE: Because I have sinned against him,
I will bear the Lord’s wrath,
until he pleads my case
and upholds my cause.
He will bring me out into the light;
I will see his righteousness.
LEADER: Who is a God like you,
who pardons sin and forgives the transgression
of the remnant of his inheritance?
You do not stay angry forever
but delight to show mercy.
PEOPLE: You will again have compassion on us;
you will tread our sins underfoot
and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
LEADER: You will be faithful to Jacob,
and show love to Abraham,
as you pledged on oath to our ancestors
in days long ago.
O LORD, MY ROCK AND MY REDEEMER
(Nathan Stiff)
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,
Greatest treasure of my longing soul.
My God, like You there is no other;
True delight is found in You alone.
Your grace a well too deep to fathom.
Your love exceeds the heavens’ reach.
Your truth a fount of perfect wisdom,
My highest good and my unending need.
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,
Strong defender of my weary heart.
My sword to fight the cruel deceiver
And my shield against his hateful darts.
My song when enemies surround me,
My hope when tides of sorrow rise,
My joy when trials are abounding,
Your faithfulness my refuge in the night.
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,
Gracious Savior of my ruined life.
My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders.
In my place, You suffered, bled, and died.
You rose the grave and death are conquered;
You broke my bonds of sin and shame.
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer,
May all my days bring glory to Your Name.

James 1:9-12, James 5:7-12, 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (ESV)
James 1
9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
James 5
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
1 Timothy 6
17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
Confession of Faith
Heidelberg Catechism (1563) Lord’s Day 15
LEADER: What do you understand by the word “suffered”?
PEOPLE: That during his whole life on earth, but especially at the end, Christ sustained in body and soul the anger of God against the sin of the whole human race. This he did in order that, by his suffering as the only atoning sacrifice, he might set us free, body and soul, from eternal condemnation, and gain for us God’s grace, righteousness, and eternal life.
LEADER: Why did he suffer “under Pontius Pilate” as judge?
PEOPLE: So that he, though innocent, might be condemned by a civil judge, and so free us from the severe judgment of God that was to fall on us.
LEADER: Is it significant that he was “crucified” instead of dying some other way?
PEOPLE: Yes. This death convinces me that he shouldered the curse which lay on me, since death by crucifixion was accursed by God.

BE UNTO YOUR NAME
(Lynn DeShazo and Gary Sadler)
We are a moment, You are forever,
Lord of the Ages, God before time.
We are a vapor, You are eternal,
Love everlasting reigning on high.
CHORUS:
Holy, holy Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb Who was slain
Highest praises, honor and glory
Be unto Your name, be unto Your name
We are the broken, You are the healer,
Jesus Redeemer mighty to save.
You are the love song we’ll sing forever,
Bowing before You blessing Your name. (CHORUS)

Benediction
(The leader or individual should read this aloud relishing in the confident assertion that Christ has conquered.)
Hebrews 13:20-21
LEADER: Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever.
PEOPLE: Amen!
Worshipping God through Giving
God has called us to be generous. He has entrusted this earth and all that is in it to us, but it is, ultimately, His! The Father gave what was most precious to Him, His own Son, in order to die for our sins. He has given to us abundantly beyond all that we could possibly ask or imagine! He is a benevolent and generous Giver! So, we give.
First, we want to remind you to continue your regular giving to TQC. This supports the ongoing work and ministry here in the Upper Valley and around the world through our missions support. Second, please consider giving to our Benevolence Fund, which supports local community care, both inside and outside the church. This is vitally important right now! As we see needs sprouting up around the community, we want to be positioned to extend a loving hand of support to those in need.
