Seminar Summary
The key to motivating children is to provide an environment in which they become self-motivated. Genesis 1:28b, 2:16, and 2:18 identify God’s innate design of the human motivation system. Self-determination Theory, arguably the leading theory of motivation in the world today, identifies how the satisfaction of certain innate psychological needs leads to intrinsic or self-motivation. This is the type of drive which extensive empirical research has linked to better performance in school, and greater vitality and creativity, among other positive outcomes, not the least of which is growth in faith. Dr. Paul Baard, who co-authored with the developers of the theory at the University of Rochester, and Ronnie Baard will provide practical examples of how to satisfy these needs and will identify specific parenting methods to bring about self-motivated, achieving, collaborative, and cooperative children and adolescents.
The seminar will also examine techniques for overcoming what gets in the way of best parental intentions and will address communication slip-ups, re-motivating an amotivated child, and reducing related family stress. The goal is to turn out young adults who have, volitionally, bought into a system of edifying behavior and speech, and are following in the ways of Christ—and to increase fun in families. Contemporary science and biblical wisdom will guide the discussions.
About the Speakers:
Paul P. Baard, Ph.D. is an organizational and sports psychologist specializing in motivation. He co-authored a book on leadership (Motivating Your Church: How any leader can ignite intrinsic motivation and growth). He has taught at Fordham University (NYC) for more than two decades. Veronica Baard is a former Managing Director of HR at a global investment bank. She has also served as a youth group leader and director of children’s ministry. They have a consulting firm specializing in organizations, including churches, and have been frequent, featured speakers at corporate, athletic, and church events. Dr. Baard appears often in the media, including in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CBS, CNN, Fox, NBC, and has published in the Harvard Business Review and academic journals. Paul and Ronnie are devoted Christ-followers, have served in church leadership, and are regular attenders at CRC.
