Time of Reflection
“Ultimately we all have to make a choice about how to resolve the mystery, or contradiction, at the heart of human experience: the bewildering mixture in this world of violence and beauty, extinction and flourishing, betrayal and generosity. What is the deepest truth about the world? Is the deepest truth a struggle for mastery and domination? Or is the deepest truth collaboration, cooperation and ultimately love? Since Nietzsche, the deck has been stacked decisively against the second answer. To suggest that the ultimate truth of the world is love sounds laughably and dangerously naive. Suggesting that the world is a pitched battle for dominance, on the other hand, sounds admirably grown-up, sophisticated and, above all, realistic.”
~Andy Crouch, Playing God
“Yet as truly man, Christ’s heart is not drained by our coming to him; his heart is filled up all the more by our coming to him.”
~Dane C. Ortlund, Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers
“To have Faith in Christ means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already. Not hoping to get to Heaven as a reward for your actions, but inevitably wanting to act in a certain way because a first faint gleam of Heaven is already inside you.”
~C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
“You’re born to shine along the way of heaven
To find you’ve been forgiven, to know it works that way
So they were right, and pride is hard to let go.
Would you believe I said so, and put it on the line?
The sun is rising – your confession won’t surprise me.
My love, lay it down
Oh let it all come down on my love
Just as sure as the sun is rising
Your confession won’t surprise me
Lay it down on my love, lay it down.”
~Smalltown Poets, “Lay It Down”

Call to Worship
Isaiah 55:1-3 (NIV)
LEADER: Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!
CONGREGATION: Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?
LEADER: Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
CONGREGATION: Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live.

COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING
(Robert Robinson & Asahel Nettleton, 1757)
Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.
Here I raise mine “Ebenezer”;
Hither by Thy help I come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure;
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.
Oh that day when freed from sinning
I shall see Thy lovely face
Full arrayed in blood-washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry
Bring Thy promises to pass
For I know Thy pow’r will keep me
Till I’m home with Thee at last.

Titus 2:11-14 (ESV)
LEADER: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people
CONGREGATION: Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age
LEADER: Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ
CONGREGATION: Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
THERE IS A FOUNTAIN
(William Cowper, 1772)
There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains:
Lose all their guilty stains,
Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away:
Wash all my sins away,
Wash all my sins away;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.
Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved, to sin no more:
Be saved, to sin no more,
Be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved to sin no more.
E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die:
And shall be till I die,
And shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.

Psalm 1 (ESV)
1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Confession of Faith
Galatians 4:4-7
LEADER: Christian, what has your God done for you?
CONGREGATION: When the fullness of time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
LEADER: And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying “Abba! Father!” Therefore, you are no longer a slave but a son; and if a son, then an heir through the gracious act of God.

ON JORDAN’S STORMY BANKS
(Christopher Miner, Samuel Stennett, 1787)
On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand
And cast a wishful eye
To Canaan’s fair and happy land
Where my possessions lie.
All o’er those wide extended plains
Shines one eternal day
There God the Son forever reigns
And scatters night away.
CHORUS:
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound for the promised land.
No chilling winds nor pois’nous breath
Can reach that healthful shore
Sickness, sorrow, pain and death
Are felt and feared no more.
(CHORUS)
When shall I reach that happy place
And be forever blest
When shall I see my Father’s face
And in His bosom rest.
(CHORUS)

Benediction
(The leader or individual should read this aloud relishing in the confident assertion that Christ has conquered.)
Luke 12:29-32
LEADER: Do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
PEOPLE: Amen!
Worshipping God through Giving
God has called us to be generous. He has entrusted this earth and all that is in it to us, but it is, ultimately, His! The Father gave what was most precious to Him, His own Son, in order to die for our sins. He has given to us abundantly beyond all that we could possibly ask or imagine! He is a benevolent and generous Giver! So, we give.
First, we want to remind you to continue your regular giving to TQC. This supports the ongoing work and ministry here in the Upper Valley and around the world through our missions support. Second, please consider giving to our Benevolence Fund, which supports local community care, both inside and outside the church. This is vitally important right now! As we see needs sprouting up around the community, we want to be positioned to extend a loving hand of support to those in need.
