Time of Reflection Quotations
“The book of Hebrews tells us that life is a journey… from weariness to rest… from alienation to the presence of God… from isolation to the city of God. And, the only way you are going to get home is by fixing your eyes on Jesus. The whole idea of this book is you don’t get home through bursts (through sprints), but in a sustained long term way. You fix your eyes on Jesus.”
~Tim Keller
“A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
~C.S. Lewis
“The temptation is that you become so aware of your own sin that you start looking inward instead of looking upward… Look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of your faith. In looking to him, for him to be the perfecter of my faith it must mean that it’s not perfect yet; it’s being perfected. But in the meantime, keep looking.”
~Jackie Hill Perry
“…the key to the Christian life [is] not hard work for Jesus, not labor for Jesus, but looking at Jesus.”
~John Piper
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace.”
~Helen Lemmel
Sermon Passage
Hebrews 1:1-4 (ESV)
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
