Time of Reflection Quotations
“The world looks for happiness through self-assertion. The Christian knows that joy is found in self-abandonment.”
~Elisabeth Elliot
“Gratitude changes the pangs of memory into a tranquil joy.”
~Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“It is the consciousness of the threefold joy of the Lord, His joy in ransoming us, His joy in dwelling within us as our Savior and Power for fruit bearing and His joy in possessing us, as His Bride and His delight; it is the consciousness of this joy which is our real strength. Our joy in Him may be a fluctuating thing: His joy in us knows no change.”
~Hudson Taylor
“He that hath so many and great causes of joy, and yet is in love with sorrow and peevishness, deserves to starve in the midst of plenty, and to want comfort, while he is encircled with blessings.”
~Jeremy Taylor

Sermon Passage
1 Peter 1:3-9; Matthew 3:16-17; Psalm 16:11; John 15:11, 17:13 (ESV)
1 Peter 1
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Matthew 3
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Psalm 16
11 You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
John 15
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 17
13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
