Time of Reflection Quotations
“There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it’s only a hundred billion. It’s less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.”
~ Richard Feynman, US educator & physicist (1918-1988)
“You don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with Jim.”
~ Jim Croce, “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim”
“What I’m saying is all I really want is someone to hold me and tell me that everything is going to be all right.”
~ Sammy in The Wedding Singer
“I believe government should be let alone. We of the Laissez-faire [Party] treat officials as dangerous reptiles: that is, we give them great respect, but as we cannot kill them, we have nothing to do with them.”
~ The Fifth Head of Cerberus by Gene Wolfe
“All I want is peace like a river
A long life of sanity
Love that won’t leave too soon
Someone to pull out the splinters
Hey reckless forgiver, you know I’m talking to you.”
~ Jars of Clay, “Reckless Forgiver”
Sermon Passage
Galatians 5:22-23, Matthew 8:23-27, Matthew 10:26-32, Romans 12:18-21, Numbers 6:24-27 (ESV)
Galatians 5
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Matthew 28
23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
Matthew 10
26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,
Romans 12
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Numbers 6
24 The LORD bless you and keep you;
25 the LORD make his face to shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
26 the LORD lift up his countenance upon
you and give you peace.
27 “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
